Having an Effective Marriage

Want to have an effective marriage?  So do we; it's good for us and even better for the kids!  Do we have all the answers?  No.  But we learn by doing, and we want to share the top things we believe go a long way in improving marriage.

A lot of groups and organizations will tell you how to have an effective marriage.  Then, there the people who really DO have effective marriages.  How do they do it?

Here are what we think are the top 5 keys to a successful marriage:

1.  Communication with your spouse.  The single greatest key to maintaining a relationship is good communications.  Don't hold anything back, and be yourself.  Women need to understand that men will get straight to the point while men need to understand that women need a long time to set something up before they finally get to the issue.  It's the way we're wired!

2.  Prayer for each other.  Nothing encourages love and dissipates seething anger like prayer.  Pray for each other all the time and not just once a day.  A prayer can be as simple as this:  "Dear Lord Heavenly Father, please be with bless and protect our family.  Grant us ever-increasing love towards you and one-another.  In Jesus name, Amen."

3.  Doing things together.  The more you do things together, the better you understand your spouse.  You have common interests when you dated, rekindle those and find other interests too!

4.  Be flexible- Marriage is the art of compromise.  Don't ever expect to always get you own way, remember, that what's best for you isn't always in the best interest of the family (or your spouse).  "Blessed are the flexible- for they shall not break!"

5.  Have Common Goals- When you work for a common goal you build a supporting team, learning and adapting to each others strengths and weaknesses.  As husband and wife, set several near term, mid term and long term goals to work for and then do it!  These goal can be in the form of where to live, where to travel, what skills to develop or what level of financial security you need.
